Xbox Reportedly Playing It Safe on Exclusive Games for Now

A lot has happened at Xbox ever since Asha Sharma stepped into the role of CEO. Among many things, Xbox game exclusivity debates is flaring up again, and it’s reportedly being discussed internally.

Xbox is mulling over a “range of options” without commitment to any major changes

Last month, Jez Corden hinted that Xbox is holding very big discussions around game exclusivity. Now, a fresh report by Tom Warren for The Verge suggests that Xbox is considering “a range of options” for future exclusives.

That’s apparently according to an internal memo. The report further adds that Asha Sharma “isn’t yet ready to commit to any major changes” yet. So, it’s highly likely that discussions around exclusivity are still fluid and far from final at this point.

Following recent releases of select Xbox games on rival platforms, many assumed exclusivity was fading into the background. Adding to that, the release of recent titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5 made many assume that the console war is over.

To catch you up, Asha Sharma, in the announcement of the big Xbox reset plan, added that the company will “reevaluate its approach to exclusivity.” While nothing is concrete at this point, all we know is that the internal chatter around exclusivity is ongoing.

Xbox could be playing safe given the success of current approach

It’s understandable that Xbox may be playing it safe when it comes to exclusivity, given the revenue it earned from cross-platform releases. Some reports even point out that Xbox made nearly $667 million by releasing first-party titles on PS5. So, a complete return to exclusivity might seem less practical for Xbox than its current approach.
