XBOX Tests Smart Download Client to Improve Download Speeds

XBOX download speed improvements are being tested through a new smart download client that automatically connects consoles to the fastest available content server.

Microsoft began testing the feature on July 23 with select members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead XBOX Insider ring. The company could expand testing to additional Insider groups before considering a wider public release.

XBOX Smart Download Client Tests Available Servers

The new download system checks available content servers shortly after a game installation or update begins.

Instead of maintaining a connection to the first available server, the XBOX client tests connection speeds across multiple server pools. It then automatically selects the server offering the fastest download speed.

The system aims to reduce situations where game downloads run slowly despite the user having a fast internet connection. Server congestion, routing conditions, and regional availability can all affect how quickly XBOX content reaches a console.

XBOX Can Switch Servers During a Download

Microsoft’s smart download client does not perform only one connection test.

XBOX repeats the speed tests periodically while the download remains active. When the system detects a faster available server, it can switch the download connection automatically.

This approach should help the console respond to changing network conditions during large installations and updates. A server that offers the best performance when a download starts may become slower as traffic levels change.

By continuing to compare available server pools, XBOX can attempt to maintain the best possible download speed throughout the process.

Who Can Test the XBOX Download Speed Feature?

Microsoft currently limits the smart download client to select Alpha Skip-Ahead XBOX Insiders.

The company has not announced when the feature will reach other XBOX Insider rings or the general public.

A broader rollout will depend on the results of the initial testing period. Microsoft may adjust how frequently the client runs speed tests or how it selects and switches between servers before releasing the feature more widely.

More XBOX Features Enter Testing

Microsoft continues to experiment with other major changes across the XBOX ecosystem.

The XeFu emulator was recently spotted running XBOX Backward Compatibility games on PC. XBOX is also testing a free cloud gaming option supported by advertisements. That model could give more players access to XBOX Cloud Gaming without requiring a paid subscription.
