XBOX’s Three Biggest Franchises Generate Over $1 Billion Annually
XBOX’s billion-dollar franchises have become central to Microsoft’s plan to restore growth across its gaming business. XBOX CEO Asha Sharma says three Microsoft-owned gaming properties each generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue, according to The Verge.
XBOX will prioritize its strongest gaming properties
Microsoft plans to direct more resources toward its most successful franchises. The company wants to increase player numbers, improve revenue, and reduce the complexity of its development pipeline.
The strategy will also focus XBOX teams on businesses and projects that offer the clearest path to sustainable growth. Sharma reportedly outlined the approach in an internal memo marking her first year as XBOX CEO.
Restructuring continues across Microsoft Gaming
The strategic shift follows major job cuts and organizational changes within Microsoft’s gaming division. The company has already laid off approximately 3,200 employees as part of what executives have described as a reset of the XBOX business.
Further layoffs could take place over the next year as Microsoft reviews its studios, development projects, and operating costs. The company wants to simplify decision-making and concentrate spending on games and services with stronger financial potential.
XBOX reaches hundreds of millions of players
Sharma described XBOX as one of the largest entertainment platforms in the world. Its games, consoles, mobile services, subscriptions, and online platforms reportedly reach more than 100 million people each day.
The wider XBOX ecosystem reaches over 500 million users per month and nearly one billion people annually.
XBOX consoles still generate the largest share of the division’s revenue. Microsoft therefore plans to keep console hardware at the center of its gaming strategy, even as it publishes more games on competing platforms and expands its mobile presence.
However, XBOX content and services revenue recently fell by 10% year over year. Hardware revenue also declined, increasing pressure on Microsoft to improve performance during its next financial year.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella remains confident that the gaming division can recover. The company expects XBOX revenue to return to growth as restructuring measures take effect and major franchises reach more platforms.
Call of Duty, Minecraft, and Candy Crush are likely candidates
Microsoft has not confirmed which three franchises generate more than $1 billion annually. However, Call of Duty, Minecraft, and Candy Crush stand out as the strongest possibilities.
Call of Duty remains one of the gaming industry’s largest annual franchises. It generates revenue through premium game sales, Warzone purchases, seasonal content, mobile games, and subscriptions.
Minecraft continues to generate substantial income through game sales, subscriptions, downloadable content, merchandise, licensing, and entertainment partnerships. Its profits also help finance the development of other Microsoft games.
Candy Crush gives Microsoft a major position in mobile gaming. The franchise produces recurring revenue through in-game purchases and advertising across a large global player base.
Microsoft wants gaming franchises to become entertainment brands
XBOX’s long-term goal involves turning its strongest properties into broader entertainment brands. Rather than depending only on individual game launches, Microsoft wants its franchises to produce revenue across consoles, PCs, mobile devices, subscriptions, merchandise, and entertainment projects.
This approach could reduce XBOX’s dependence on hardware cycles and unpredictable release schedules. It could also help Microsoft use its existing audiences more effectively while limiting investment in projects with weaker commercial prospects.
