XBOX's “Worth the Wait” Update Sparks Fresh Disc-to-Digital Speculation
Despite trending online for all the wrong reasons over the past week following sweeping layoffs and major restructuring, XBOX is teasing what could be a significant console update landing for XBOX Insiders next week.
XBOX may finally reveal its long-rumored disc-to-digital feature next week
Brad Rossetti, who leads the XBOX Insider Program, revealed that Microsoft has paused all new XBOX Insider console updates this week. According to Rossetti, the break is intentional, as the team is preparing something that will be “worth the wait” for Insider members.
That brief message has quickly sparked speculation across the XBOX community.
While Microsoft hasn’t revealed what the update includes, Windows Central’s Jez Corden believes it could finally be tied to Xbox’s long-rumored disc-to-digital feature, internally referred to as “Positron.”
If previous reports are accurate, the feature would allow eligible XBOX owners to convert physical XBOX One and XBOX Series X game discs into digital licenses. The system is also expected to work with XBOX Play Anywhere for supported titles, making it easier to access purchased games across XBOX consoles and Windows PCs without relying on the original disc.
Microsoft has never officially announced the feature, but reports have claimed it has been undergoing internal testing for quite some time. That makes next week’s Insider update a possible opportunity for the company to introduce it publicly, although nothing has been confirmed.
Even if the mystery update turns out to be something else entirely, it appears XBOX Insiders will get early access before any wider rollout reaches the public. With Insider builds temporarily on hold, it likely won’t be long before Microsoft reveals exactly what has been keeping the team busy.
