windows update faster

Windows 11 version 24H2 significantly improves the already robust update foundation of Windows. In a blog post, Microsoft says the latest version offers reduced installation time, restart time, and central processing unit (CPU) usage for Windows monthly updates.

Besides, enhancements to handling feature updates further reduce download sizes for most endpoints by extending conditional downloads to include Microsoft Edge.

Windows 11, version 24H2, includes several improvements to how you install monthly updates compared to the previous Windows 11 client servicing stack:

  • Parallel processing of component manifests.
  • Optimized reading and parsing of component manifests.
  • Scalable use of available random-access memory (RAM).

The Redmond-based tech giant conducted two tests on different devices to determine the speed of the Windows 11 24H2 installation, and the results were surprising.

For the first test, a typical scenario of updating a well-maintained device with the February 2024 security base image (Build 22621.3155) to the following month’s update was considered. Windows 11, version 24H2, performed significantly better than Windows 11, version 22H2. The installation process was 45.6% faster.

The second test imitated updating a device that is out of date by 18 months, an atypical scenario. Again, Windows 11, version 24H2, showed significant improvements. The installation process was 43.6% faster.

Both tests used 8 vCPUs, 16 GB RAM, SSD storage VMs with Windows 11 22H2 installed.

This is not all, though. In Windows 11, version 24H2, the traditional feature update downloads are also smaller by approximately 200 MB. This is thanks to the redesign and conditional download of Microsoft-developed apps that you first saw in Windows 11, version 22H2.

For Windows 11, version 24H2, Microsoft extended this design to include Microsoft Edge, saving approximately 200 MB for some endpoints. This means faster monthly updates and smaller feature update downloads for devices transitioning to Windows 11, version 24H2.
