Microsoft is placing the bets on sustainability goals. After making its latest Surface laptops some of the most sustainable on the market, the company is bringing Xbox along for the ride. In a new post on Xbox Wire, the Redmond-based tech giant has announced several initiatives designed to help players repair and extend the life of their Xbox Series S/X consoles.
Microsoft is expanding its repairability program for Xbox Series X/S consoles. Starting January 20, players can take their broken Xbox Series X/S consoles to nearly 700 uBreakiFix by Asurion locations in the U.S. to be fixed. The tech giant is also now selling replacement parts for the Xbox Series X/S and parts for the console chassis via the Microsoft Store and iFixit, respectively.
But it doesn’t stop here. The company also revealed that it has updated the packaging for the Xbox Series X/S to reduce its plastic footprint. Microsoft claims that the new packaging is paper and fiber-based and doesn’t use single-use plastics — a change that will save over 10,000 kilograms annually.
Xbox’s sustainability initiatives aren’t just about cutting waste, however. Microsoft says that it has “made significant advancements” in how the Xbox Series S handles video content, which has reduced the console’s power consumption by nearly 10%. Moreover, Microsoft is working with game developers to create more energy-efficient titles that will shave a few bucks off players’ monthly electric bills.
Microsoft has set a goal for Xbox to become carbon-negative by 2030. The company says that it’s making progress toward that target and other sustainability goals, but it still has a long way to go.
