Rise of the Tomb Raider is joining the list of games to be enhanced for the Xbox One X when the console launches in November, and the graphics update will be free for players who already purchased the game. According to a blog post on the official Tomb Raider blog, the upcoming Xbox One X update has been developed by Nixxes Software, the same company that previously ported the action/adventure game to the Xbox 360. On the Xbox One X, the game support for 4K graphics, HDR, spatial audio (including Dolby Atmos) and many other visual enhancements such as improved reflections, volumetric lights and more.

Interestingly, Xbox One X owners will be able to choose between the following three visual modes:

  • Native 4K: (full 3840 by 2160) for highest fidelity resolution
  • Enriched Visuals for stunning graphic upgrades
  • High Frame Rate for the smoothest possible gameplay

Rise of the Tomb Raider currently runs at 30 FPS in 1920×1080 resolution on the Xbox One, so it seems that the first option will make the game run in true 4K at 30 FPS. With the second option, the game will likely look much better (but not in native 4K) while maintaining a 30 FPS lock. As for the third option, it will supposedly make the game reach that 60 FPS sweet spot, which many gamers may prefer.

It remains to be seens if more game developers will follow that path and offer different visual modes for their Xbox One X enhanced games. Do you care more about your game having beautiful 4K graphics, or is it more important for you to play your games at a rock-solid 60 FPS? Sound of in the comments if you think game developers should give this choice to Xbox One X owners.
