windows 11 ads in windows 10

Microsoft decided to pause the full-screen Windows 11 upgrade prompt ads on Windows 10 after users’ feedback that the alerts were more intrusive than informative. Initially, these alerts were part of Microsoft’s strategy to encourage users to transition to Windows 11. However, not everyone was ready or willing to make the switch.

The plan to expand these upgrade prompts to more Windows 10 users was set for April 2024 but was quickly shelved. In an update to the Microsoft 365 advisory (spotted by Windows Latest), Microsoft subtly announced the pause, stating it was a response to user feedback.

This change was primarily aimed at non-managed Windows 10 PCs, which include a variety of professional and workstation editions not overseen by IT departments. Microsoft’s distinction between managed and non-managed devices became a focal point, clarifying who would be affected by this pause.

Despite the halt, Windows 10 Home PCs that meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements still see the upgrade prompts, highlighting Microsoft’s selective approach. This move has sparked discussions about the future of Windows 10, especially with its retirement date looming.

The Extended Security Updates program offers a solution that allows users to receive security updates for a fee after the official end-of-support date. Still, it doesn’t address the underlying push toward Windows 11.
