Microsoft has just launched Windows 11 Insider Preview Build (KB5046756) to the Beta Channel. This latest update brings a few new features, including the ability to resume OneDrive files from your phone to your PC seamlessly and some improvements to passwordless logins.
The ability to seamlessly resume OneDrive files from your phone to your PC is exactly what it sounds like. If you open a file from OneDrive on your phone — whether it be a Word doc, Excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation, OneNote notebook/page, or a PDF — and then unlock your Windows 11 PC within five minutes, you’ll get a notification asking if you want to “pick up” where you left off with the file.
Clicking the notification will open the file in your PC’s default browser. This feature works with a personal Microsoft account only, and you’ll need to use the same Microsoft account on your phone and PC.
If you’d prefer not to use this functionality, you can disable it by heading to Settings > Apps > Resume. If you want to provide feedback on the feature, Microsoft asks that you do so in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Devices and Drivers > Linked Phone.
Microsoft is also improving Windows 11’s passwordless login functionality with the new build. Microsoft is adding API support for third-party passwordless providers and has updated its WebAuthn APIs to support a plugin authentication model for passkey.
In the future, Windows customers can choose a third-party provider as an additional option alongside Microsoft’s passkey implementation while maintaining the Windows Hello user experience.
KB5046756 also introduces a new keyboard shortcut—Ctrl + Alt + Minus—for Magnifier users to quickly toggle between the current zoom level and 1X zoom. It fixes an issue where File Explorer’s address bar overlaps with content in full-screen (F11) view and issues causing explorer.exe to crash when creating new folders in certain locations.
Finally, Microsoft says it’s gradually rolling out the ability to right-click and share local files under the Recommended section of the Start menu in KB5046756. The company is also improving the performance of the context menu launch for people when right-clicking on cloud files in File Explorer, and it’s making a change to help ensure that thumbnails for cloud files are displayed more consistently in search results within File Explorer.
