The ERROR_RANGE_NOT_FOUND with error code 644 (0x284), and message The specified range could not be found in the range list, appears in Windows computers when a program or system process tries to access a resource, like memory or a range, that is either not available or doesn’t exist. The reasons for the BSoD could be an issue with configuration settings or registry errors.

How can I fix ERROR_RANGE_NOT_FOUND?

Before moving to the advanced steps, make sure you perform these simple ones first:

  • Restart your computer as it could help you fix temporary system errors
  • Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer and look for errors related to memory, or hardware conflicts, then head to BIOS settings and check the memory-related settings
  • Ensure there are no pending Windows updates

1. Update/reinstall device drivers

  2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK to open the Device Manager app.
  3. You will see the list of system components, expand each cateogry one by one to locate a device with yellow triangle and an exclamation mark inside it.

Once the PC is in clean boot mode, enable the third-party services and startups one by one to check what is causing the BSoD to narrow down the problem. If none of the services and startup items are responsible, reverse engineer these steps to restart your PC in normal mode.

6. Restore your computer settings to a previous point

  2. Type sysdm.cpl and click OK to launch the System Properties window.

7. Reinstall Windows (Last resort)

Check these prerequisites before you begin:

  • A reliable internet connection and if using a laptop, connect it to a charger
  • Keep your Microsoft account credentials handy
  • A blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage. Make sure you have no content on the USB drive, as it will be deleted
  • A list of essential apps, their licenses, and credentials ready
  • Back up your important files including files, documents, videos, photos to an external storage or cloud

Create an installation media

  1. Download the Windows 11 media creation tool on another device or affected PC if it is working.
  2. The mediacreationtool.exe will be downloaded, double-click it to open and click Yes on the UAC prompt.

  4. Remove the checkmark next to Use the recommended options for this PC and choose the Windows edition and language.Use the recommended options
  5. Plug in the USB device; select the USB flash drive and click Next.USB Flash drive
  6. The USB device will be formatted, and Windows installation files will be added to the drive. Click Finish and safely eject the flash drive if you are performing steps on another PC.

Clean install Windows

  1. Connect the USB flash drive into the affected computer, press the Windows key, click Power, then press & hold the Shift key while selecting Restart.

  3. Choose the USB drive from the following page.
  4. Your device will boot up and you will get the Windows setup dialog box, choose Language, Time and Keyboard method, then click Next.Select language

  6. You can enter the product key at the next screen, or click I don’t have a product key, and then select Next.
  7. On the Select the operating system you want to install page, choose the OS and click Next.
  8. Click Accept on the next page.

  10. Choose the drive that you want to choose to install Windows.

Now, the installation will begin. Make sure your PC stays on until the process is complete. Once Windows is installed, your PC will restart, and you must follow the prompts to complete the setup. You can then login to your computer and go to Settings>Windows Update>Check for updates, download & install if available.
