Windows 11 Will Finally Stop Nagging You About OneDrive Backup
OneDrive backup prompts on Windows 11 are finally getting a proper opt-out option, giving users a way to permanently reject the feature instead of repeatedly dismissing reminders.
OneDrive backup finally gets a proper opt-out
Microsoft has changed one of Windows 11’s most criticized OneDrive prompts by adding a clear “Opt out of backup” option.
As spotted by Windows Latest, the new option appears in a full-screen OneDrive backup recommendation on Windows 11 25H2.
Previously, existing Windows 11 PCs displayed choices such as “Continue” or “Remind me in 3 days.” Choosing the reminder option only postponed the message.
As a result, the same full-screen OneDrive recommendation could return after Windows updates, reboots, or regular PC use.
The new option lets users explicitly reject OneDrive backup instead of repeatedly postponing the prompt.
Windows 11 setup also pushed OneDrive
Microsoft used a similar approach during the initial Windows 11 setup process.
Users could choose between “Continue” and “Skip for now,” but skipping did not act as a permanent rejection. Windows could recommend OneDrive backup again later.
The new “Opt out of backup” wording makes the choice much clearer and appears to give users a permanent way to decline the feature.
Microsoft gives users more control over OneDrive
The change addresses complaints about a Windows 11 dark pattern that made postponing OneDrive backup easy while making a permanent refusal much less obvious.
Microsoft can still promote cloud backup, but users now have a clearer choice when they do not want OneDrive protecting their files.
The company has made other OneDrive changes following user criticism. Microsoft recently added a OneDrive Photos uninstall option after backlash over how the app reached users.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on a new OneDrive Sync Engine designed to make file syncing faster.
