Google Search Now Allows You to Jump from AI Overviews to AI Mode With Follow-Up Questions
Google Search, as you may know, used to be all about blue links and quick answers. However, with AI suddenly coming into the picture, Google has expanded the Search experience using AI Overviews. Opinions around AI Overviews in Google Search have been mixed, but they tilt more toward the negative side. Well, it seems the criticism isn’t stopping Google.
Keep the Conversation Going with AI Overviews in Google Search
Today, Google announced two upgrades that it says will eventually reshape how AI Overviews and conversations work together. First, Google has made Gemini 3 the default model powering AI Overviews globally. That means when Search decides an AI-generated summary is helpful, it will now rely on its latest and most capable model. The idea is to provide better reasoning and clearer answers to users.
However, the biggest change is how Search handles follow-up questions. Until now, AI Overviews often felt like a stopping point. You got a summary, then had to edit your query to go deeper. Google is fixing that. Going forward, you’ll be able to jump straight from an AI Overview into AI Mode, which allows you to continue the conversation without losing context.
In a real-life scenario, this should make Search feel far more fluid. Google says internal testing shows people prefer this kind of natural back-and-forth, especially for research-heavy or multi-step tasks. More importantly, Google says that this isn’t about replacing traditional Search, as it’s positioned as a complementary experience.
The new conversational handoff from AI Overviews to AI Mode is now rolling out globally on mobile.
