Lenovo Reportedly Warns Gamers to Upgrade Hardware Now Before Price Increases Amid Memory Crunch

If you are into gaming, this year and possibly the next one are likely going to be a bumpy ride, thanks to shortages in key components, from DRAM and NAND to GPUs, across PCs and consoles. The internal components shortage and skyrocketing prices amid the memory crunch are reportedly also the reasons behind the delayed PS6 launch and rumors around increasing PS Plus prices. The next-gen Xbox console isn’t immune, either. That’s not all; Nintendo is also taking the hit, as Switch 2’s production cost has reportedly spiked.

Lenovo urges gamers to upgrade now amid soaring prices and shrinking hardware supply

Given the industry-wide situation, Lenovo’s North America President, Ryan McCurdy, has warned customers, saying that if you’re thinking of upgrading your PC or gaming setup, now is the time. Speaking to CRN, McCurdy highlighted the current “pricing sensitivity” as part of the massive AI infrastructure buildout (via Wccftech). Here’s the statement:

If the infrastructure is critical in the next three, six, 12 months, and the pricing sensitivity is high, then we get into a scenario where we’re acting quickly because essentially the current stock that is at our distributors and at our partners [has] some of the most attractive product pricing that will exist for the next six to 12 months.

The report also references an anonymous U.S. system integrator, who noted that hardware is disappearing from channels faster than ever before. Per the integrator, long-term availability will likely become a bigger issue than cost. In short, the waiting game could cost you extra money.

With Lenovo explicitly urging buyers to make purchases “as soon as possible,” it’s clear the market is under tremendous pressure. For those in the middle of the usual upgrade cycle, the question becomes one of timing versus risk. With prices likely rising and availability thinning, locking in your hardware now may be the smartest move for serious gamers.
