Marathon ESRB Page Unexpectedly Lists PS4 and Xbox One Versions

Marathon launches today, March 5, following Bungie’s recent Server Slam test and a fresh look at early post-launch plans. Bungie says the Server Slam went well, hitting 143,000 concurrent players.

ESRB page unexpectedly lists Marathon for last-gen consoles

Right now, Bungie has only confirmed Marathon for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. That lineup matches the game’s current-gen focus, including dense environments and modern visual features.

Eurogamer reports that Marathon’s ESRB rating page also lists PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, even though Bungie has not announced them. The ESRB rating labels the game T for Teen, citing Animated Blood, Language, and Violence.

That listing points to two realistic explanations. The ESRB entry could contain a simple platform error, or it could reveal unannounced last-gen versions early. Rating boards have surfaced extra platform details ahead of official announcements before, so the listing has sparked immediate speculation.

Can PS4 and Xbox One handle Marathon?

If Bungie plans last-gen releases, the big question centers on performance. The Server Slam reportedly ran smoothly on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but older consoles already show limits in large, always-evolving shooters. Games like Fortnite and Apex Legends still run on last-gen hardware, yet they increasingly highlight the gap.

Marathon’s stylized art direction could help Bungie scale visuals down more easily than a hyper-realistic shooter. Even so, the game’s overall design targets current-generation systems, so a last-gen port would likely demand major compromises.

Separate from the platform mystery, Bungie has confirmed players will get rewards regardless of the platform they use, which supports a more unified progression approach across the game’s ecosystem.

For now, Bungie has not commented on the ESRB platform listing, and reporters have contacted the studio for clarification.
