Marathon Surpasses 143,000 Concurrent Players on Steam During Early Server Slam Test
Bungie’s extraction shooter, Marathon, has posted a surprisingly high player count during its open Server Slam test on Steam. The numbers hint at strong early interest ahead of the official launch on March 5 and give a glimpse of how busy the game may be once fully released.
Marathon shows strong early momentum on Steam
Data from SteamDB shows that Marathon reached a peak of 143,621 concurrent players on Steam on day one of the Server Slam, a number that stands out for a title still days away from launch (via The Gamer). That count places the shooter among the more engaged community tests on the platform so far this year.
To put it into context, Embark Studios’ extraction game ARC Raiders once hit roughly 189,668 concurrent players during its own Server Slam last year. While Marathon hasn’t quite matched that figure yet, its early turnout isn’t far behind, and there’s still the weekend ahead for numbers to grow.
Early feedback on the Server Slam has been mixed, with some players praising the turnout and others pointing to chat bugs and input issues that Bungie says it’s tracking for improvement before launch.
What this could mean for launch
Early Steam peaks often reflect curiosity, but Marathon’s numbers show strong interest from PC and potential console players, tapping into a growing extraction shooter audience. That said, speculation remains about how many of these testers will become paying players at launch. Sustained success will likely depend on post‑launch support, seasonal content, and how the title’s competitive features add up over time.
