Bungie’s Marathon Breaks PlayStation Pattern With Xbox and Steam Rewards

Bungie and Sony’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon is already making waves ahead of launch. The FPS quickly climbed Steam’s paid charts as soon as preorders went live, signaling strong early demand.

A temporary bug briefly installed Destiny 2 for some users after preordering Marathon, but the issue has since been resolved.

Marathon Breaks From Sony’s Usual Exclusivity Strategy

As Windows Central notes, Sony frequently leverages exclusivity deals to reinforce its ecosystem. In the past, that often meant games skipping Xbox and, at times, even PC.

Marathon, however, will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. That cross-platform approach already marks a shift compared to traditional Sony-backed arrangements.

Many players assumed PlayStation users would still receive exclusive in-game perks.

Bungie Confirms Weapon Charms for All Platforms

Marathon addressed the speculation directly on X, clarifying that certain weapon charms will also be available to Steam and Xbox players.

The charms in question include PlayStation Plus-themed cosmetics inspired by Helldivers 2, Death Stranding 2, and Ghost of Yotei. While PlayStation branding appears central to the promotion, Bungie confirmed that other platforms will not miss out entirely.

It remains unclear whether some cosmetics will stay platform-exclusive or if each ecosystem will receive its own themed rewards.

Speculation Around Platform-Themed Items

The confirmation has fueled speculation about possible Xbox or Steam-themed cosmetics. Some fans have suggested Halo-inspired items for Xbox, given Bungie’s legacy with the franchise.

For Steam, the direction feels less certain. Valve-related nods remain possible, though Bungie could simply expand the existing PlayStation-themed items to PC users. No additional details have been confirmed.

Marathon has faced criticism since its reveal, with some questioning its direction in a crowded extraction shooter market. Reports indicate Bungie revisited parts of development and responded to player feedback.

Recent updates and clearer communication appear to be shifting sentiment. Early preorder momentum on Steam reinforces that perception.

Marathon’s Server Slam runs from February 26 to March 2, 2026. The full release follows on March 5, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

With cross-platform cosmetic support now confirmed and preorder interest running high, Marathon enters its final stretch before launch with renewed momentum.
