Google Adds Secure Gemini Chat Sharing Through Google Drive
Last week, Google enhanced the Gemini app with a wide array of new features, and the newest update adds secure sharing capabilities that allow users to share AI chats, canvases, and generated media through Google Drive integration.
The feature focuses on collaboration for Google Workspace users and brings Gemini closer to Google Docs-style team workflows.
The new sharing system uses the same underlying technology already powering Google Drive sharing. Google says the interface should feel familiar to Workspace users because it closely resembles the sharing controls already found in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Gemini chats can now be shared like Google Docs
With the new feature, users can share Gemini conversations, generated images, videos, and collaborative canvases directly through Drive permissions.
Google says shared Gemini chats behave as snapshots. Recipients receive a copy of the conversation up to the moment it was shared rather than access to the live original thread.
This approach prevents collaborators from accidentally changing the owner’s original AI conversation while still allowing them to continue the discussion independently.
If someone expands on a shared chat, their edits and prompts remain separate from the original owner’s Gemini session. The feature effectively creates a branching workflow for AI collaboration.
Workspace admins get granular sharing controls
Google Workspace administrators will have full control over how Gemini sharing works inside their organizations.
The feature comes enabled by default for Workspace customers, but admins can limit sharing permissions using existing organizational policies.
Administrators can decide whether users may:
- Share Gemini content internally only
- Share content outside the organization
- Use public link sharing
- Share through Google Drive integrations
Google says admins can configure settings separately for organizational units and configuration groups through the Admin Console.
Public link sharing and Drive-based sharing can also be managed independently.
Rollout starts this week
Google says admin controls started rolling out on May 28, 2026.
End users on both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains will begin seeing the feature starting June 3. The company expects the rollout to finish by June 8.
The update arrives during a broader expansion of Gemini features across Google’s ecosystem. Recently, Google introduced the Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model and reportedly tripled Gemini usage limits across Antigravity after user backlash related to restrictions and availability.
