The countdown is over, and we have our first announcement from the Xbox Games Showcase. We got our first extended look at gameplay for Gears of War: E-Day, the next entry in the shooter series.

Developer The Coalition says Gears of War: E-Day has been built entirely from scratch. According to the studio, no assets, animations, weapons, characters, or audio from previous entries were reused. Instead, every aspect of the game was recreated in Unreal Engine 5.

The Coalition wants players to experience the horror of first contact

Set in the fictional city of Kalona, which takes inspiration from Vancouver, the story takes place during the first three days of Emergence Day. Rather than showing the global Locust invasion from multiple perspectives, the campaign remains focused on Bravo Squad as they witness their city collapse around them.

Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return as playable characters, but they are joined by two new squad members: Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. The campaign supports four-player online co-op, while console players can also enjoy two-player split-screen play.

Unlike previous Gears titles where the Locust are already a familiar enemy, E-Day aims to capture the confusion, fear, and uncertainty of humanity’s first encounter with the underground threat.

The Coalition explained that the invasion begins with isolated incidents and panic before escalating into a full-scale war. The goal is to make players experience the terror of Emergence Day as civilians and soldiers struggle to understand what is happening.

The developer also modernized gameplay while preserving the series’ signature cover-based combat. Players can expect smoother movement, improved cover transitions, sliding mechanics, low-ground cover options, vertical combat opportunities, jumping, and larger combat spaces throughout Kalona.

New weapons and the origin of the Chainsaw Lancer

Fan-favorite weapons such as the Gnasher shotgun and Longshot sniper rifle return with redesigned visuals and handling.

The game also introduces new weapons, including the brutal Gut Puncher and the Incinerator. One of the campaign’s biggest story elements will explore the origin of the iconic Chainsaw Lancer, one of the franchise’s most recognizable weapons.

The Coalition says every weapon was rebuilt specifically for Unreal Engine 5 to take advantage of the new technology and deliver more impactful combat.

Horde Siege expands multiplayer battles

Multiplayer remains a major part of the package. A new mode called Horde Siege introduces 12-player PvE battles where three squads work together to defend Kalona across larger city maps. The traditional competitive experience also returns, with classic 4v4 Versus multiplayer available at launch.

With larger environments and more players on the battlefield, Horde Siege appears to be one of the biggest multiplayer additions in the series’ history.

Launch details and Game Pass availability

Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6 for XBOX Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud gaming, Steam, and Xbox Play Anywhere. The game will also be available on day one through Game Pass Ultimate.

The showcase featured more than just Gears. Microsoft also confirmed a release date for Halo: Campaign Evolved and unveiled the new XBOX Series X25 Limited Edition console.

Players who missed the presentation can catch up with all of the announcements in the XBOX Games Showcase 2026 recap.
