XBOX Layoff Reports Spark New Workplace Retaliation Allegations
Reports suggest Microsoft is preparing another round of layoffs across its XBOX division, and former employees are urging current staff to safeguard documentation if they have raised workplace concerns.
According to Game Developer, several former XBOX employees allege that previous layoffs disproportionately affected workers who filed HR complaints, participated as witnesses in workplace investigations, or challenged management decisions. Microsoft has not commented on the allegations or announced any new layoffs.
Former employees warn staff to prepare
The latest claims come as rumors continue to circulate that Microsoft could announce another wave of job cuts affecting XBOX, with some reports also suggesting that additional studios may face closure, including speculation that additional studios may face closure.
Among those speaking publicly is former Halo Studios art director Glenn Israel, who has previously accused Halo Studios leadership of harassment and retaliation, claims that have been echoed in reports about Halo Studios leadership. In light of the reported layoffs, Israel advised current employees who have raised workplace complaints to preserve emails, chat logs, and other documentation before any cuts are announced.
He argued that if employees involved in complaints are selected for layoffs, those decisions could potentially be viewed as retaliatory depending on the circumstances. Israel also encouraged anyone affected by future layoffs to consult an attorney before signing severance agreements and specifically recommended requesting a document retention agreement to help preserve relevant evidence.
Employees describe alleged retaliation
Game Developer cited four former XBOX employees who described what they believed was a recurring pattern across XBOX-owned studios.
One anonymous former employee claimed they were laid off after serving as a witness during an internal investigation involving a studio executive who allegedly berated employees during meetings. According to the source, the executive later attempted to identify employees who participated in the investigation and subsequently influenced layoff decisions.
Another former employee alleged that a supervisor responded negatively after they challenged management during a meeting. The employee said they were later placed on a performance improvement plan for what was described as “disrespecting” management, adding that subsequent complaints to HR produced no meaningful action.
A third former employee alleged that leadership at an XBOX-owned studio retaliated against workers who questioned workplace conditions. The same source also claimed that an employee seeking disability accommodations experienced retaliation.
The allegations remain unverified, and Microsoft has not publicly responded to the claims outlined in the report. Likewise, the company has not confirmed whether another round of XBOX layoffs is imminent, despite reports that another round of XBOX layoffs is imminent.
