OpenAI Drops GPT-5.6 API Prices, Luna Discounted by 80%
The company also adds a faster Sol Mode
OpenAI has just announced massive discounts across its GPT-5.6 API lineup while also introducing a faster processing option for its flagship model. The discounted API prices comes at a time when AI companies continue competing on both performance and cost.
OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra pricing
OpenAI announced that GPT-5.6 Luna now costs $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens. That’s an 80% price reduction, making Luna significantly more affordable for developers building AI-powered applications.
The company also lowered pricing for GPT-5.6 Terra by 20%. The model now costs $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens. That said, OpenAI didn’t change the standard pricing for GPT-5.6 Sol, its flagship reasoning model.
In fact, the company has launched a new Fast mode through the API. OpenAI says it delivers up to 2.5 times faster processing than Standard mode while costing twice as much. The company added that intelligence remains unchanged, meaning developers only pay extra for lower latency.
ChatGPT Work and Codex users also benefit
The lower Luna and Terra pricing also affects how usage is counted in ChatGPT Work and Codex. According to OpenAI, customers using those services will effectively get more usage from the same budget.
The pricing changes are available starting today for API customers. OpenAI says it remains focused on improving model capability, speed, and cost efficiency across its latest AI lineup.
