Xbox Cloud Gaming just got two interesting ways to play without relying on a traditional controller. Xbox is testing phone-based controls for supported Smart TVs and a new Wi-Fi connection feature for its Xbox Nano Controller. Both previews are rolling out starting today.

Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you use your phone as a controller

The first addition could be especially useful when a controller isn’t nearby. Players can now use supported Android and iOS phones to control cloud games directly on compatible Smart TVs. Interestingly, the controls appear inside the phone’s browser. This means players don’t need to install a separate controller application for the experience.

Some games will also receive controls tailored to their gameplay. To try the feature, users must enable Preview Features under Settings and Account in the latest supported Smart TV experience. When launching a game without a physical controller connected, the TV will display an option to use a phone instead. The preview is rolling out in countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming is supported.

Xbox Nano Controller gets a new Wi-Fi connection option

The second preview is currently limited to players in the United States. As rumored, Microsoft is testing cloud connect with the Xbox Nano Controller, which connects directly to the cloud gaming server through Wi-Fi.

Unlike a traditional Bluetooth connection to the TV, this approach may reduce input latency. In simple terms, controller commands could reach the game faster, making cloud gameplay feel more responsive.

However, cloud connect remains an early test and doesn’t support every cloud gaming experience yet. Players can configure it through the Xbox beta app on Android or Xbox Accessories on PC.

PC setup requires Xbox Insider enrollment. Once connected to Wi-Fi, players must launch a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming experience using the same Xbox account.
