Teams Admins Are Getting a Much Easier Way to Restore Data

Microsoft Teams is getting a built-in backup and recovery feature that will give administrators a simpler way to restore Teams data without relying as heavily on APIs or SharePoint.

Microsoft lists the upcoming capability under feature ID 570668 on its Microsoft 365 roadmap. The company plans to begin rolling it out in December 2026.

Admins will be able to restore Teams and channels

The new recovery interface will let administrators restore an entire team or individual channels to a previously known good state.

Microsoft says the feature will support standard, private, and public channels. Recovery will also extend to underlying Teams content, including files and messages exchanged inside channels.

Today, administrators often need to use Teams APIs or SharePoint when recovering certain Teams content. The new interface should bring more of that process directly into Teams.

Teams backups will remain available for 30 days

Microsoft currently lists a 30-day retention period for the recovery capability.

Admins should therefore be able to restore supported Teams data as long as the required version remains within that recovery window.

Microsoft has not explained how frequently restore points will be created or how granular the recovery process will become. It also has not detailed whether administrators will be able to restore individual files or messages separately from their channels.

Rollout starts in December 2026

The roadmap currently lists Teams on the Web as the supported platform, with rollout scheduled to begin in December 2026.

Microsoft has yet to publish detailed documentation showing exactly where administrators will find the recovery interface or how the restore workflow will operate.

The change comes as Microsoft continues making broader changes to Teams. Teams is moving to a new domain, with administrators facing a deadline to prepare for the transition.

Microsoft is also improving Teams meeting transcripts with additional administrative controls, while some Teams Free features will become unavailable until users verify their age.
