Blizzard has officially announced World of Warcraft: Forever, a new take on the original World of Warcraft experience that expands vanilla WoW with new zones, quests, dungeons, raids, and other content.

Rather than following the expansion progression of the main game, WoW Forever will remain rooted in the design philosophy of early World of Warcraft and put greater emphasis on leveling, exploration, and the overall journey.

WoW Forever stays permanently at level 60

World of Warcraft: Forever will operate inside what Blizzard describes as a “time bubble” based around the first year of the original World of Warcraft.

The level cap will remain at 60 for the foreseeable future, meaning players will not eventually progress into later expansions such as The Burning Crusade.

Blizzard will instead continue expanding the vanilla-style world with new content built around the mechanics, pacing, and design principles of early WoW.

Importantly, that content will not only target max-level players. Blizzard plans to add quests and activities throughout the leveling experience, giving players more reasons to explore the world rather than rushing toward endgame content.

More than 1,000 quests and three new zones

WoW Forever will introduce more than 1,000 new quests spread across the leveling experience.

Blizzard is also creating three entirely new zones: Mount Hyjal, Zephras Isle, and The Riverglades.

Several existing World of Warcraft zones will receive substantial overhauls as well, although Blizzard has not yet revealed the full list of locations getting changes.

The additions significantly expand the amount of content available before players reach level 60.

Nine dungeons and two new raids are coming

Blizzard is also expanding WoW Forever’s group content with nine new dungeons.

At max level, players will get access to two new raids designed around smaller group sizes. One raid will support 10 players, while the other will feature 20-player groups.

PvP players are also getting a new Battleground called Darkspear Islands.

These additions allow Blizzard to expand the endgame without moving beyond the level-60 structure that defines the Forever experience.

Skyborne Elves join as a new playable race

World of Warcraft: Forever will introduce the Skyborne Elves, a completely new playable race.

Their homeland will appear in one of the game’s newly added zones.

Blizzard is also expanding existing race and class combinations. Promotional material has already shown an Undead Paladin, indicating that class restrictions from the original game will change in some areas.

Players can also expect new professions and reputations alongside the expanded questing content.

Classic visuals get modern lighting and shadows

Blizzard plans to improve World of Warcraft’s visuals without abandoning the classic art direction.

The updated engine will introduce new lighting, global illumination, and real-time shadows, giving environments more modern rendering while keeping the original visual identity intact.

Players will also get an SD/HD character toggle, allowing them to choose between different character presentation styles.

World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4

Blizzard will launch World of Warcraft: Forever on November 4, 2026.

Players will get an earlier opportunity to try the new version through an open beta beginning September 17, 2026.

WoW Forever represents a different direction from simply progressing Classic through existing expansions. Blizzard instead plans to keep the game permanently anchored to the vanilla era while continuously expanding that version of Azeroth with new content.

Elsewhere in gaming, Microsoft continues expanding its lineup, with 25 new XBOX handheld games arriving alongside 32 new games coming to XBOX, giving players even more releases to look forward to this month.
