Diablo 5 Revealed With a Fallen Sanctuary, New Classes, and Returning Runewords
Diablo V has officially been revealed by Blizzard, and the next mainline entry starts from an unusually grim position: Diablo has already won.
Blizzard officially unveiled Diablo V during the Forging the Next Era panel at BlizzCon 2026.
Instead of stopping Diablo before he conquers Sanctuary, players enter a world where the heroes of the past have failed, and Sanctuary has fallen. Players take control of the Heir to Westmarch, who must fight through a world already under Diablo’s control.
Blizzard says the game remains early in development, with regular development updates scheduled to begin in 2027.
Diablo has conquered Sanctuary
Diablo V changes the usual setup by making Diablo an active force from the beginning rather than a threat waiting at the end of the campaign.
Diablo has already conquered Sanctuary and now plans to use it as a stepping stone toward invading the High Heavens.
His influence will shape both the story and the world throughout the game, giving players a setting that already reflects the consequences of his victory.
Sanctuary will change as players explore it
Blizzard is also building a more dynamic version of Sanctuary.
Areas can change when players return to them, with terrain, points of interest, enemies, and rewards shifting over time. Diablo’s growing influence can reshape locations through terror, meaning revisiting an area may not result in the same experience twice.
The system appears designed to make Sanctuary feel less static while giving players more reasons to return to previously explored locations.
A caravan replaces traditional safe havens
Diablo V will also change how players interact with friendly characters.
Instead of relying mainly on established towns and liberated strongholds, players will build a traveling caravan made up of survivors they encounter during the journey.
Caravan members can act as vendors and companions, while the community itself expands as the story progresses.
Individual characters will also have their own histories and storylines, turning the caravan into a growing group that follows the player through the campaign.
Three Diablo V classes revealed
Blizzard has revealed Demon Hunter, Monk, and the new Plague Knight as Diablo V’s first three classes.
Demon Hunter focuses on twin crossbows and mobility, Monk combines martial arts with holy powers, while Plague Knight spreads disease across the battlefield and consumes it to gain power. More classes will follow during development.
Diablo II heavily influences itemization
Blizzard is looking back to Diablo II for several of Diablo V’s loot and inventory systems.
The developers want items to remain readable and memorable while still giving players equipment worth chasing across hundreds of hours.
Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements for equipment, while physical inventory management and gear sets are also returning. Larger items will take up more inventory space, bringing another familiar Diablo II-style mechanic back into the series.
Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords are also coming back, giving players another way to build and customize equipment.
Diablo V will additionally include a deeper crafting system inspired by the approach used in Lord of Hatred.
Diablo V has no release date yet
Blizzard has not announced a release date for Diablo V and says the game remains early in development.
The company plans to begin publishing regular development updates in 2027. Those updates will cover the game’s progress, gameplay systems, and features as development moves forward.
Diablo V wasn’t Blizzard’s only major BlizzCon announcement. The company also revealed World of Warcraft: Forever, a new take on the original World of Warcraft experience.
