Microsoft Teams Will Let Admins Choose Which File Types to Block

Microsoft Teams will soon give administrators more control over potentially dangerous attachments by letting them choose which file extensions are blocked in chats and channels.

Microsoft is expanding Weaponizable File Protection in Teams so administrators can create their own list of blocked file extensions based on their organization’s security requirements.

Admins who do not want to build a custom policy can continue using Microsoft’s recommended default list.

According to Microsoft’s roadmap, the feature is currently in development and is scheduled to start rolling out in November 2026.

Weaponizable File Protection already blocks dangerous attachments

Microsoft Teams already scans messages and blocks attachments that use file types commonly associated with malware and other security threats.

However, administrators currently cannot change Microsoft’s predefined blocked file-type list.

The upcoming update will give organizations more control over which extensions users can send through Teams while still allowing admins to stick with Microsoft’s default recommendations.

The new controls are coming to Teams across platforms

Microsoft plans to make the customizable file protection policy available across Teams on Windows and macOS desktops, Android, iOS, and the web.

The company also plans to roll it out worldwide for standard multi-tenant cloud customers.

In other Teams news, Microsoft Teams will let two presenters share screens at the same time, while another upcoming feature will let users silence every Teams notification at once.
