OpenAI Gives Codex a Major Upgrade With Cloud Environments, Voice CLI & Code Review

In addition to launching the $500 Pro plan and expanding Agents API with computer use and AWS support, OpenAI has also announced major upgrades for Codex at DevDay 2026. The latest upgrades allow developers to run coding tasks across computers, phones and reusable cloud environments. The company is also refreshing the Codex CLI with voice controls and adding a new code review experience inside the ChatGPT desktop app.

Codex can now follow developers into the cloud

The new Codex cloud environments are designed to make development work easier to continue across devices. Developers can prepare reusable environments containing their repositories, tools, dependencies, permissions and other settings, allowing future tasks to start from the same setup. OpenAI says these environments can be accessed from desktop, web and mobile.

The Codex CLI is also getting a substantial refresh. Developers can now start and steer tasks using their voice, while the new /agents view makes it easier to delegate work and track multiple agents at once. OpenAI is also improving everyday CLI workflows with better prompt editing, session resumption, worktree support and a cleaner terminal interface. The refreshed CLI is available across all plans.

Codex can review your code while you work

OpenAI is also introducing a new Code Review experience in the ChatGPT desktop app. Developers can inspect summaries and diffs, then ask Codex about potential problems before responding to GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. Automatic reviews can also let Codex perform an initial pass in the cloud while the developer is away from their computer.

The new cloud environments are available to Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education, and Enterprise users, while the refreshed CLI and Code Review features have broader availability.

OpenAI has had a busy stretch of announcements lately. The company released GPT-6.1 Sol with near-Astra performance at a lower price, while Dots introduces always-on AI agents powered by GPT-6 Astra.
