OpenAI Launches Dots, An Always-On AI Agents Powered by GPT-6 Astra

After multiple leaks, OpenAI has officially launched Dots, a new class of always-on AI agents designed to keep working on users’ goals even when they are not actively chatting with them. The company says Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra and can operate from their own cloud computer and browser.

Unlike a traditional chatbot that waits for a prompt, Dots are designed to take on ongoing work, learn from feedback and continue handling tasks in the background. OpenAI says they can connect to more than 4,000 apps through its plugin ecosystem and can be reached through ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Dots can keep working after you walk away

Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, allowing it to work on projects without requiring the user’s PC to remain involved. Users can open the Dot’s computer to inspect what it is doing and can optionally give it permission to connect to their own devices.

OpenAI says Dots can handle multiple projects at once, with examples including investigating bugs, preparing launch materials, updating analysis when new evidence arrives and producing content from interview transcripts.

The agents can also message users with progress updates, questions or decisions that need attention. Conversations can continue across ChatGPT, Slack and Teams while the Dot carries its context between those channels.

OpenAI is putting guardrails around the always-on agents

Dots are not designed to have unrestricted access. Users choose which apps they can access, while Custom Rules can allow specific actions, require approval or block them entirely. OpenAI also says sensitive actions, such as changing a password, remain under the user’s control.

OpenAI is rolling out Dots to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, while Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare users can access the beta when their workspace administrator enables it. The first Dot is included with eligible Pro and Business Premium plans at no additional cost.

The company is also developing specialist Dots for organizations, giving them dedicated identities, credentials and access to specific business systems. OpenAI says it is working with Microsoft to integrate these specialist Dots with Agent 365’s enterprise governance and security controls.
