Google Gemini Could Soon Take Control of Your Mac With Fewer Permission Prompts
Google is testing a major upgrade for its Gemini desktop app that could give the AI more control over a Mac. The upcoming will likely allow Gemini to work beyond selected folders, access the internet and interact with other applications without asking for approval at every step.
Gemini could get much more control over your Mac
The news comes via TestingCatalog, which spotted a hidden “Additional sandbox options” setting to a recent Gemini desktop build. The setting is still being tested and is not available as a normal feature yet.
The wording around the setting suggests Gemini could eventually access files outside the folders a user has specifically connected, communicate with other applications and use the internet while carrying out tasks. That would allow the AI to handle longer workflows instead of stopping whenever it needs another permission.
The report further suggests that Gemini could potentially read, create, modify and delete files across a Mac, while also interacting with apps such as Mail, Safari and Messages. However, Google is not removing every safety barrier as critical actions would still require permission from users, including purchases and approving legal documents.
For now, this remains a test, and Google has not announced when the computer control will reach regular Gemini users on Mac. If Google announces it, we’ll update you.
