Xbox Promises to Simplify Its Game Publishing Process Following Developers' Feedback

Microsoft has finally acknowledged something Xbox developers have been complaining about for years. Bringing a game to Xbox should be easier than it is today, and the company says it is now working to remove some of the unnecessary friction developers face.

Xbox is starting with its concept and publishing processes

The comments came from Scott Van Vliet on X and said Microsoft has heard feedback from developers and agrees that the process needs to improve.

Van Vliet specifically pointed to ID@Xbox and the developers building games for Xbox. Microsoft says it will start by simplifying areas that it knows can create unnecessary friction, including its concept and publishing processes.

Microsoft wants developers to spend less time navigating Xbox’s processes and more time actually bringing their games to players. This could be especially important for smaller independent studios.

Every additional certification, approval or publishing hurdle can require extra time and resources, potentially making an Xbox version less attractive when developers are already working across multiple platforms.

Microsoft has not yet explained exactly what will change or when developers can expect the new processes to roll out. Van Vliet simply ended the post with “More soon.”

Xbox could make it easier for developers to choose the platform

The announcement does not mean every game will automatically come to Xbox. Developers will still decide which platforms make sense for their projects. However, reducing the amount of work required to bring a game to Xbox could make the platform easier to consider from the beginning of development, rather than something studios add later.

The move also comes as Xbox continues pushing beyond its traditional console strategy, making games available across Xbox consoles, PC, cloud gaming and other platforms. For now, Microsoft has only confirmed that it is working on the changes.
