Windows 11 26H2 KB5127648 October 2026 Patch Fixes Explorer Crashes, AC-3 Audio Playback, VPN Errors & More

Microsoft’s October 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 brings fixes for several frustrating issues. The KB5127648 update addresses File Explorer crashes, AC-3 audio playback, VPN connection failures, printing problems, and more.

Windows 11 KB5127648 fixes Explorer, audio, and VPN issues

The update fixes an issue affecting Windows Explorer in multi-user environments, including Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogix. On affected systems, Explorer.exe could fail to start after sign-in or repeatedly crash, leaving users with a black screen.

Microsoft has also resolved an AC-3 audio playback issue affecting some applications. Meanwhile, Always-On VPN connections could remain stuck on Connecting after installing KB5124008. Some connections also failed after an initial attempt, sometimes displaying the error, “The specified port is already in use.”

Gaming, printing, and storage fixes

KB5127648 fixes mouse input stuttering in some games. It also resolves printing failures affecting certain applications and devices using RAW or Generic Text Only printer drivers. The printing issue appeared after installing the August 2026 security update.

The update also addresses a Storage Spaces Direct problem. Some tiered virtual disks could fail to come online after certain security updates, making dependent clustered workloads unavailable.

Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in fix

Microsoft has fixed an issue that could prevent Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in from working after a cold boot on some devices. The update also includes security improvements and continues the rollout of updated Secure Boot certificates. Additionally, it introduces auditing and optional policy controls for ReFS volumes on externally attached storage devices. Auditing is enabled by default, while enforcement remains disabled by default.
