Modern Warfare 4 Arrives in 10 days, and Xbox Players Will Have to Buy It

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. On PC it is sold through Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC.

It is the first mainline Call of Duty since 2013 to skip PS4 and Xbox One entirely, and the first since Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard that will not be on Game Pass at launch. For Xbox players, that changes the question from when to download it to how to buy it.

How a COD: MW 4 Xbox key works with Play Anywhere

Digital copies are the default route for most Xbox owners, and a COD: MW 4 Xbox key works the same way as a purchase made directly in the Microsoft Store. The 25-character code is redeemed on a Microsoft account through the Microsoft Store app on the console, the Xbox app on Windows, or at redeem.microsoft.com.

Keys are also sold through third-party stores such as LootBar CDKey, which lists Xbox codes alongside Steam and other PC keys. It is worth confirming that a listing is for the Xbox Store version before buying, since only that version carries the Play Anywhere entitlement described below.

The detail that matters most for Windows users is Xbox Play Anywhere. Activision’s edition and pre-order breakdown confirms that the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC versions are covered by Play Anywhere, so a single purchase grants access on both the console and a Windows PC through the Xbox app. The Battle.net and Steam versions are separate products and are not part of that entitlement.

Before redeeming, check three things:

  • Edition. Modern Warfare 4 comes as a Digital Standard Edition, a Digital Vault Edition and a Physical Standard Edition on disc for Xbox Series X and PS5. The Vault Edition is digital only.
  • Region. Keys are often tied to a specific region, which has to match the country set on your Microsoft account.
  • Account. Redeem the code on the profile you actually play on. Once a code is used, it cannot be moved to another account.

A Digital Standard Edition bought on Xbox can be upgraded to the Vault Edition later through the Xbox Store, and the upgrade applies across console and PC.

PC requirements, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot

Activision published its final launch specs on its Modern Warfare 4 support page. The bar is modest at the bottom end, but there are two hard requirements that will catch some players out: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot must both be enabled, as the game uses the Ricochet anti-cheat system.

Every tier needs an SSD with 115 GB free at launch, DirectX 12 and a broadband connection. Only Intel and AMD processors with the AVX instruction set are supported, and Intel Arc cards require Resizable BAR. Nvidia’s recommended driver for launch is due on October 21.

Activision also recommends installing the Xbox PC app before launch, on any PC storefront, so shaders can be compiled during installation rather than at first boot.
