PS5 Games Can Now Run on XBOX One, but There's a Catch

A developer has managed to run a PlayStation 5 emulator on the original XBOX One, following earlier experiments that brought PS5 emulation to the XBOX Series X.

The latest development adds to a growing list of console emulation experiments. Recently, we saw XBOX Cloud Gaming running on jailbroken PS5 consoles, along with XBOX 360 and original XBOX games running on PS5.

PS5 emulator can launch games on the original XBOX One

According to developer Maccosomo, the emulator can launch less demanding games, including Quake II and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, on Microsoft’s older console.

The project uses an AI-assisted port of KytyPS5, a PC-based PS5 emulator that the developer adapted into a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) application.

The emulator runs through XBOX Developer Mode, allowing the developer to test the software without modifying the console’s operating system. Microsoft does not officially support the project.

Performance remains a major limitation

Although running a PS5 emulator on an XBOX One represents technical progress, performance remains a significant obstacle.

On the more powerful XBOX Series X, Astro Bot reportedly runs at approximately 10 FPS, making it largely unplayable.

The original XBOX One has considerably weaker hardware, so demanding PS5 games are unlikely to reach playable frame rates. For now, the developer has focused on demonstrating that less demanding titles can launch rather than delivering a practical PS5 gaming experience.

The experiment also highlights the growing interest in running games across competing platforms. In another recent development, the unofficial Xodus Nexus project brought XBOX Game Pass games to Linux and Steam Deck.
