Latest Version of Edge Fails to Launch on Some Enterprise PCs, Microsoft Confirms
Microsoft has confirmed a bug in Edge 155 that prevents the browser from launching on some enterprise PCs. The issue affects managed devices that upgraded from earlier Edge versions while retaining existing browser profiles.
According to Microsoft’s known issues documentation, a service-side change triggered the problem. Microsoft has since rolled back the change to prevent further incidents, but the rollback does not automatically restore Edge on already affected devices.
Microsoft shares a temporary workaround
Microsoft has outlined a workaround for enterprise administrators dealing with the issue.
Administrators should follow these steps:
- Disable the scheduled update restart task in the Microsoft Edge management service.
- Navigate to the Microsoft Edge User Data\Policy folder.
- Delete the folder’s contents, but preserve the Primary Account file to protect existing browser profiles.
Microsoft recommends this workaround for affected enterprise devices while it develops a permanent solution.
A permanent fix is still under investigation
Microsoft is investigating a client-side fix but has not provided a release date. The company also has not confirmed whether the next Edge update will resolve the problem.
The issue primarily affects managed enterprise environments, so regular home users are unlikely to encounter it.
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues working on other Edge changes, including watermark protection for Edge for Business, removing XSLT support starting in December 2026, and a potential feature that could allow Edge to update without restarting the browser.
