Microsoft Edge for Business Gets Watermark Protection in December
Microsoft has confirmed that Watermark Protection for Edge for Business will become generally available in December 2026, adding another security measure to discourage unauthorized sharing of sensitive corporate information.
The company previously tested watermarking in Edge for Business, and the feature now has an official release window.
According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 547827, the browser will display persistent watermarks over protected content, including details such as the user’s name and a timestamp.
Edge renders these watermarks directly, preventing users from removing or modifying them.
How watermark protection works in Microsoft Edge
Watermark Protection integrates with Microsoft Purview and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies to identify sensitive corporate content.
The feature activates when administrators apply restrictive policies, including:
- Block copy: Prevents users from copying protected content.
- Block upload: Restricts uploading sensitive information.
- Block print: Prevents printing protected content.
Simply applying a sensitivity label or an audit-only DLP policy will not trigger watermarking. Organizations must configure qualifying restrictive policies.
IT administrators can manage Watermark Protection through the Edge Management Service. The feature requires Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 licensing.
Microsoft Edge supports watermarks across multiple browser surfaces
Microsoft has confirmed that Watermark Protection supports several browser features and content types, including:
- Regular browser tabs and split-screen tabs.
- Pop-up windows and application windows.
- Local sensitivity-labeled PDFs and Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) labeled PDFs.
- Printing, screenshots, and Reading mode.
Microsoft also plans to extend watermarking to Sidebar and Shoreline surfaces and introduce dynamic watermarks in a future update.
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues working on other Edge improvements, including a feature that could allow Edge to update without restarting the browser and the upcoming Enhanced Security Mode Plus.
