Microsoft Introduces OneDrive Sync CLI for IT Admins
Microsoft has announced a new OneDrive Sync Command Line Interface (CLI) that will help IT administrators diagnose synchronization problems, check account status, and automate troubleshooting tasks.
The new tool provides real-time information about OneDrive clients, configured accounts, folder backups, and applied policies, allowing administrators to identify issues without manually checking multiple settings.
Microsoft introduced the tool during a recent OneDrive event, where the company also showcased major AI upgrades for OneDrive.
OneDrive Sync CLI offers detailed diagnostics and automation
The new CLI uses the odsync command and gives administrators access to several diagnostic capabilities, including:
- Checking configured OneDrive accounts and their sign-in status.
- Viewing OneDrive client and CLI version information.
- Checking whether the OneDrive client is running and identifying its installation method.
- Monitoring folder backup configuration and synchronization status.
- Inspecting applied Group Policies and device compliance information.
Administrators can examine multiple OneDrive accounts or focus on a specific account when investigating synchronization problems.
The tool also supports verbose diagnostics and JSON output, allowing IT teams to integrate OneDrive troubleshooting into automated scripts and monitoring systems.
OneDrive Sync CLI is coming soon
Microsoft hasn’t announced an exact release date for the OneDrive Sync CLI, but the company says the tool is coming soon.
Organizations interested in testing its capabilities can already register for early access.
The announcement follows several other OneDrive changes, including Microsoft’s plans to simplify the OneDrive right-click menu in Windows 11 and the introduction of AI-powered Copilot Search for OneDrive and SharePoint.
