Microsoft Pushes Xbox Trade-Ins Amid Hardware Shortages
Microsoft is reportedly emailing Xbox owners to encourage them to trade in unused Xbox Series X and Series S consoles as hardware shortages and rising manufacturing costs put pressure on the gaming industry.
The company is directing recipients to Best Buy’s trade-in program, which allows customers to exchange their consoles for store credit. The emails appear to target owners who haven’t used their Xbox consoles recently, potentially including those with multiple devices.
The campaign comes as Microsoft faces declining hardware sales and uncertainty surrounding its next-generation consoles. Recent reports suggest that the next Xbox handheld could arrive in 2027, while Project Helix may cost up to $1,800 in 2028.
Hardware shortages could explain Microsoft’s Xbox trade-in campaign
The gaming industry continues to face rising component costs, particularly for RAM, as increasing demand from AI infrastructure puts pressure on memory supplies.
Encouraging players to trade in unused consoles could help increase the availability of secondhand Xbox hardware without requiring additional manufacturing.
However, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that hardware shortages are behind the campaign.
The initiative also comes during a difficult period for console sales. According to Circana data, Xbox hardware sales recently fell to record-low levels, while PlayStation has also experienced declining hardware sales.
Although Xbox Series X and Series S consoles remain relatively easy to find in the US and UK, availability is reportedly more limited in parts of Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East.
Xbox hardware shortages could continue until 2028
Some analysts expect memory shortages to persist until 2028 or even 2029, potentially increasing manufacturing costs for both existing and upcoming gaming consoles.
Microsoft’s trade-in campaign could help more players access secondhand Xbox hardware, although it won’t directly increase production of new consoles.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also considering changes to its gaming services. Recent reports suggest the company could introduce à la carte Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, allowing subscribers to choose which features they want.
The company also recently revealed 21 games during its October 2026 ID@Xbox Showcase, highlighting upcoming releases and additions to Game Pass.
