Microsoft plans to bring the Edge Extended Stable Channel to macOS in January 2027, allowing organizations to receive major browser updates every eight weeks instead of every two weeks.

According to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the expansion will give IT administrators more time to test browser changes before deploying them across managed Mac devices.

Extended Stable currently supports Windows only. The macOS expansion follows Microsoft’s move toward faster two-week release cycles.

Microsoft Edge Extended Stable Will Receive Major Updates Every Eight Weeks

The Extended Stable Channel delivers major feature updates every eight weeks, helping organizations avoid frequent browser changes that could affect internal applications and workflows.

Unlike Edge Beta or other preview channels, Extended Stable uses the same browser application as the regular Stable Channel, but follows a different update schedule.

Microsoft will continue providing security fixes throughout the eight-week cycle, so organizations won’t have to wait for the next major feature release to receive important security updates.

IT administrators can also test upcoming features in Edge Beta before introducing them to employees through Extended Stable.

When Will Edge Extended Stable Arrive on macOS?

Microsoft expects to launch Edge Extended Stable for macOS in January 2027, according to its roadmap.

Both Edge Stable and Extended Stable are currently on version 156, with Microsoft planning to align the channels again at version 160.

During this period, Extended Stable will continue receiving security updates while delaying the major feature changes that reach the regular Stable Channel.

The expansion will give businesses managing both Windows and macOS devices a more consistent approach to browser updates, particularly when they need additional time to test compatibility with enterprise applications.

Microsoft recently confirmed that the latest version of Edge fails to launch on some enterprise PCs.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Edge for Business is getting watermark protection in December, adding another security feature for enterprise users.
