Microsoft has outlined several improvements introduced to Visual Studio throughout October 2026, including new Git tools, an updated GitHub Copilot Chat experience, and features designed to improve developer productivity.

According to Microsoft’s October recap, the changes also include Hot Exit for recovering unsaved documents, keyboard shortcuts for moving tabs, and improved font and color customization.

Visual Studio improves Git integration and merge conflict resolution

One of the main improvements allows developers to compare a Git commit directly against their current working tree.

Developers can open the Git Repository window, right-click a commit, and select Compare with Working Tree to examine differences without switching between multiple tools.

Microsoft has also simplified merge conflict resolution. Developers can now resolve conflicts across multiple files simultaneously instead of handling each file individually.

In the Git Changes window, users can select multiple files under Unmerged Changes and choose Keep All Current or Take All Incoming to apply the same resolution across the selected files.

These additions build on the Visual Studio September 2026 update, which introduced new agent capabilities and a NuGet fixer.

GitHub Copilot Chat gets a redesigned experience

Microsoft has also introduced a new GitHub Copilot Chat experience that extends the Copilot SDK foundation across Ask mode, Agent mode, and chat interactions.

The updated experience supports more capable agentic workflows, longer-running sessions, and prompt caching to improve efficiency.

Developers can enable the new experience by navigating to Tools > Options > GitHub > Copilot > Copilot Chat, selecting Use new Copilot chat experience, and restarting Visual Studio.

The improvements come as Microsoft continues expanding Copilot’s development capabilities, including plans to let GitHub Copilot switch between local and cloud AI.

Microsoft is also bringing GitHub Copilot integration to Microsoft Teams, allowing developers to work on code-related issues without leaving their conversations.

Hot Exit restores unsaved documents between sessions

Another notable addition is Hot Exit, which allows Visual Studio to preserve unsaved documents when developers close the IDE and restore them in a later session.

The feature helps developers resume unfinished work without manually saving every open document before closing Visual Studio.

New keyboard shortcuts and customization options

The October improvements also introduce keyboard shortcuts for moving tabs, documents, and tool windows.

Developers can use Ctrl + Shift + Pg Up and Ctrl + Shift + Pg Down to reposition items without relying on the mouse.

Microsoft has also improved the font and color customization experience, making it easier to personalize the IDE’s appearance.

Developers can access these improvements through the latest Visual Studio updates. Together, the changes focus on simplifying everyday development tasks, improving Git workflows, and expanding Copilot’s capabilities.
