Windows 11 is finally making File Explorer more useful with changes that tackle some familiar annoyances. With the preview update, KB5127936, Microsoft is gradually rolling out faster right-click menu, better search results, and dark mode support for Folder Options. The update also gives users more control over every day file management.

Windows 11 makes File Explorer’s context menu customizable

One of the biggest highlights in Windows 11 KB5127936 preview update for version 25H2 and 26H2 is the redesigned context menu. Microsoft says it opens faster, reduces clutter, and lets users control which commands appear when right-clicking files or folders.

A new Customize menu option opens a dedicated Settings page. From there, users can enable or disable commands like Send to and Create shortcut, add Print, and manage app extensions. You can also move Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, and Share into the main menu as text entries. Properties can move to the bottom.

This is useful for anyone tired of Windows 11’s crowded right-click menu. Instead of relying on third-party tools, users can now tailor the menu to their workflow. Microsoft says the default configuration requires no changes, while Shift plus right-click on the desktop reveals additional options.

File Explorer search and navigation get useful upgrades

The update also improves File Explorer search results. Information such as a file’s name, location, and date now follows a more consistent layout. This should make results easier to scan, especially when searching through large folders.

Another handy addition is support for the tilde character in the address bar. Typing ~\AppData takes you directly to the AppData folder within your Windows user profile. It offers a quicker route for users who regularly access hidden system locations.

Dark mode finally reaches Folder Options

Windows 11 KB5127936 also brings dark mode support to File Explorer’s Folder Options dialog. This helps the dialog better match the operating system’s dark appearance. The update applies to Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2, with builds 26200.9818 and 26300.9818, respectively. However, Microsoft is rolling out these features gradually, so installing the update does not guarantee immediate access to every change.
