Windows 11 Lets You Restart Before Updates Finish, but Microsoft May Change That
Microsoft is considering changes to the Windows 11 Restart now button after users complained that it appears before all updates finish installing.
The issue gained attention when Microsoft MVP Nathan McNulty showed Windows 11 offering a restart while the October 2026 security update was only 2% installed.
Microsoft confirmed that this behavior is intentional but acknowledged that the current design could confuse users.
Why Windows 11 Shows Restart Now While Updates Are Still Installing
Microsoft’s Jen Gentleman explained that Windows 11 displays the Restart now button when some updates are ready to complete installation during a reboot, even if other updates are still installing.
This allows users to restart immediately without waiting for every pending update.
Microsoft product manager Aria Hanson added that some advanced users prefer this option, particularly when they want to complete a specific update without waiting for others.
However, restarting too early could mean waiting for additional updates and performing another reboot later.
Microsoft Is Exploring Changes to the Restart Button
Microsoft is now looking at ways to make the restart experience clearer while keeping the option available for advanced users.
One suggestion involves changing the button to show “Installing updates” while updates remain in progress, with a separate “Restart anyway” option in a dropdown menu.
Another possibility involves disabling the main Restart now button until all updates finish installing.
Hanson confirmed that Microsoft wants to accommodate users who prefer to restart immediately and those who would rather wait.
Importantly, Windows 11 will continue showing restart notifications only after all updates finish installing.
Microsoft has not confirmed which design it will adopt or when these improvements might arrive.
For now, users should expand the Windows Update list and check whether any updates still show “Installing” before clicking Restart now.
In other Windows 11 news, Microsoft recently released the Windows 11 26H1 KB5127653 preview update with several changes and improvements, alongside the KB5127936 preview update.
Microsoft is also working on a fresh look for the Windows 11 Security app, including updated layouts and controls.
