Among the five new builds released today, one has landed in the Windows 11 Experimental (Future Platforms) channel. The Insider Preview Build 29704.1000 adds a major privacy change, letting users manage camera, microphone, and location access for individual desktop apps. It also fixes a Windows Update installation error and an audio playback issue affecting some AMD graphics cards.

Windows 11 finally lets you control desktop app permissions individually

Previously, traditional desktop applications relied on a single device-wide setting for camera, microphone, and location access. That is changing with Build 29704.1000. Windows Insiders can now review and allow or deny these permissions for individual desktop applications. This gives users much better control over which apps can access sensitive resources.

You can manage these permissions by heading to Settings > Privacy & security. From there, open Camera, Microphone, or Location to review individual app access.

Windows will also prompt users when an application requests access for the first time. Interestingly, existing permission choices remain untouched. Previously allowed apps retain access, while denied apps stay blocked. You should note that some applications may appear under unexpected names because they use shared system components or browser-hosted experiences. Windows may also label certain applications as Unsigned when it cannot verify their publisher information.

Microsoft advises users to grant access only to applications they recognize and trust. Existing enterprise policies will continue working as intended.

Windows Update and AMD audio issues get fixed

Microsoft has fixed a Windows Update installation error affecting some Insiders. The issue triggered error 0x80070057 – 0x20003 when upgrading to newer builds. The installation reportedly failed during the SAFE_OS phase while processing the INSTALL_UPDATES operation.

Microsoft has also addressed an audio playback problem affecting certain AMD graphics cards. The issue could prevent HDMI and DisplayPort audio from working after installing recent builds.

Last but not least, Microsoft has also released Windows 11 Beta channel builds, one that moves the channel to version 26H2. Also, don’t forget to read about the one rolled out for Insiders in the Beta 26H1 channel.
