Microsoft released an updated version of their Edge browser, Microsoft Edge 85, and more precisely version 85.0.564.41.
For those using the browser, the updates are available via the automatic update functionality and as a download from the official website.
The last update of Microsoft’s official browser for Windows 10 was rolled out in July 2020.
What’s new in Edge 85?
According to the release notes, the developers have been working on a few new features, along with fixing a long list of known bugs and behavior patterns.
Most of the novelties focus on the built-in PDF reader. Edge 85 comes with an adjustable page layout, to make reading more accessible, plus a highlighter, to markup favorite or interesting paragraphs.
The Read Aloud function in the reader has been fixed. In the previous version it wouldn’t highlight the correct words.
Additionally, Windows devices running the Canary channel of Microsoft Edge now have a new Link format available. Upon discussing with their community, the developers made available both a readable format and the plain-text version of an URL, when copy-pasting it.
Those using the Collections feature now have the possibility to sort their collections by name, get collection suggestions from Pinterest, plus a paste option inside the collection’s menu.
Last but not least, Microsoft improved the Developer Tools to support emulation of the Surface Duo device to check websites and content in the new dual-screen device. Additionally, users can now match keyboard shortcuts to VS code.
Some notable sore points fixed
One of the errors that have been bothering users for a long time is that the Edge tabs turn black. After several fixes, the developers say that this affects users with certain hardware and is easily triggered by resizing an Edge window. Killing the GPU process should fix the issue.
For Discord users, the platform should now be loading smoothly.
Users running on macOS 11 preview (Big Sur) can now confidently use Edge 85. The developers announced that they’ve identified the issue preventing the browser to load and are working to get it resolved before Big Sur is officially released.Â
