Activision is Breaking Black Ops 6 Free From Call of Duty HQ on July 7

call of duty games game pass

If you’ve grown tired of launching one Call of Duty game just to navigate through another, there’s finally some good news. Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is about to break away from Call of Duty HQ, which marks another step toward separating recent entries from the franchise’s all-in-one launcher.

Black Ops 6 is leaving Call of Duty HQ on July 7

According to Activision, Black Ops 6 will officially become a standalone download on July 7 at 9:00 AM PT. Once the transition goes live, players who own the game will simply need to download the standalone version, after which it can be launched directly without relying on the main Call of Duty HQ installation. As part of the change, legacy Black Ops 6 content stored inside Call of Duty HQ will automatically be removed, helping reclaim storage space on players’ systems.

The move continues a trend Activision quietly started last year. Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III were also separated from Call of Duty HQ, each receiving their own standalone installations after originally being bundled inside the launcher. Black Ops 6 now becomes the latest title to follow the same path.

Call of Duty HQ originally debuted in 2023 as a central hub designed to house annual Call of Duty releases alongside Warzone. The idea was to simplify updates, manage storage more efficiently, and make switching between games easier. In practice, however, many players criticized the launcher for adding unnecessary steps before launching a game and creating oversized installations that bundled together content they didn’t necessarily own or play.

Another sign Activision is reshaping Call of Duty HQ

Speaking of future releases, Black Ops 6 leaving the launcher could also make room for Activision’s next Call of Duty title later this year. While the publisher hasn’t directly linked the decision to its upcoming release plans, removing older entries from Call of Duty HQ keeps the hub from becoming increasingly bloated as new games arrive.

When Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III became standalone downloads, they each received separate achievement lists outside Call of Duty HQ. If Activision follows the same approach again, Black Ops 6 players could soon see a standalone achievement list as well.

For many Call of Duty fans, the biggest win isn’t just freeing up storage. It’s finally being able to launch Black Ops 6 directly, without first navigating through Call of Duty HQ.
