Another RTX 5090 Connector Melts, and PNY Reportedly Won’t Cover It

Another GeForce RTX 5090 owner has reported severe damage to the GPU’s 16-pin power connector, adding to the growing number of similar incidents involving Nvidia’s flagship graphics card.

A Reddit user said they noticed a burning smell while playing Crypt of the NecroDancer. After inspecting the system, they found that plastic between two adjacent contacts on the power connector had melted away, leaving a visible hole.

The affected card was a PNY GeForce RTX 5090 installed in a DigitalStorm prebuilt PC. So far, there is no confirmed technical diagnosis explaining what caused the failure.

Connector melted during lightweight gaming

The owner said they had played Shattered Pixel Dungeon for around an hour before switching to Crypt of the NecroDancer.

Neither game would normally push an RTX 5090 close to its maximum power consumption. However, the user did not record GPU power draw, connector temperatures, or individual wire currents when the failure occurred.

That makes it difficult to determine whether the problem started with the cable, connector, GPU, system assembly, or another component.

PNY reportedly rejected the warranty claim

According to the owner, PNY rejected the warranty claim because the damaged power cable was not supplied by the GPU manufacturer.

DigitalStorm reportedly offered to help the customer handle the case with PNY. The owner was also able to remove the damaged cable before any visible damage appeared on the GPU-side socket.

Instead of returning the card, the user found a local repair service charging around $180. It remains unclear whether the RTX 5090 suffered damage beyond the connector itself.

RTX 5090 connector concerns continue

Reports of damaged or melted RTX 5090 power connectors continue to raise concerns around the 16-pin connection used by high-end GPUs.

Individual cases can involve different graphics cards, power cables, power supplies, connector seating, and operating conditions, so there is still no single confirmed explanation for every reported failure.

The incidents are also arriving as RTX 50 GPU prices continue climbing, with the industry preparing for another potential GPU price hike.
