BioWare’s ill-fated sci-fi multiplayer title Anthem is officially reaching its end. EA has confirmed the game’s servers will be permanently shut down on January 12, 2026.
Launched in 2019 as BioWare’s attempt to pivot into live-service multiplayer, Anthem never quite landed with critics or fans. Despite early ambitions and a planned reboot effort called Anthem NEXT, development stalled, and seasonal updates were canceled by 2021. Now, the final chapter is here.
In a blog post, BioWare shared, “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days.”
Starting today, in-game premium currency purchases are disabled. However, players can still use any remaining credits in the store until the shutdown date.
There’s no offline mode, so once the servers go dark, the game will be entirely unplayable—even for those who bought it. If you’re an EA Play or Xbox Game Pass subscriber, Anthem is leaving those services much earlier, on August 15, 2025.
EA confirmed no BioWare jobs were affected by the decision to sunset the title. The original Anthem NEXT team had already been reassigned to Mass Effect and Dragon Age projects years ago. It’s one last flight for Anthem. So, if you want to suit up in your Javelin one more time, the countdown starts now.
