Anthropic Localizes Claude Pricing in India, but UPI Payment Options Are Still Missing
After months of relying on dollar-based subscriptions and foreign currency conversions, Anthropic has quietly begun rolling out local pricing for its AI chatbot, making India one of the company’s biggest strategic markets outside the United States.
Anthropic begins Claude rupee pricing rollout in India
The news comes via TechCrunch, which reports that Anthropic has started displaying Indian rupee pricing for Claude subscriptions across its website and mobile apps for some users, marking the first major localization step for its AI assistant in the country. The rollout comes as global AI companies continue competing for India’s rapidly growing community of developers, students, and enterprise customers.
The company now lists Claude Pro at ₹2,000 per month when billed annually, while the premium Claude Max plan starts at ₹11,999 per month. Businesses can also subscribe to Claude Team from ₹2,399 per seat each month. The local pricing already includes applicable Indian taxes, although subscription costs may vary slightly between the website and mobile app stores.
Despite introducing rupee pricing, Anthropic has not yet added support for Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s most popular digital payment system. Subscribers currently need to pay using credit or debit cards, or through Apple’s App Store and Google Play billing. Rival OpenAI introduced both Indian pricing and UPI payments for ChatGPT last year, making Claude’s payment experience comparatively more limited.
Anthropic says India accounts for 5.8% of Claude’s global usage, making it the company’s second-largest market after the United States. While local pricing removes one of the biggest barriers for Indian users, the lack of UPI integration suggests Anthropic’s localization efforts are still a work in progress. As competition in India’s AI market heats up, broader payment support could become the company’s next major step.
