Asus Googlebook Leaks Online With Glowbar, Aluminum OS, and Dedicated Gemini Key

Earlier this week, Lenovo’s Googlebook 15 leaked online, revealing its design, Gemini key, port selectiion, and some other details. That leak hinted Google was getting closer to unveiling its AI-first laptop lineup. Now, another hardware partner has entered the spotlight. This time, it’s Asus, whose first Googlebook laptop has leaked.

Folks over at 9to5Google have shared the first look at the Asus Googlebook CX9406, giving us another glimpse at Google’s upcoming laptop ecosystem. The leaked images reportedly originated from an iF Design Award listing before quietly disappearing from the website.

Unlike Lenovo’s brighter design, Asus seems to be taking a different approach. The leaked laptop features a dark gray aluminum finish with a slimmer profile and rounded edges. One detail immediately stands out. A glowing LED strip, referred to as the Glowbar, sits directly above the Asus branding on the lid. While Google hasn’t confirmed its purpose, the LED bar may light up for notifications, AI interactions, or system alerts.

Just like Lenovo’s leaked model, Asus’ version includes a dedicated Gemini key alongside a Google launcher key replacing the traditional Windows Start key. The exact functionality remains unknown, but both laptops now share the same layout, suggesting these shortcuts are part of Google’s broader Googlebook experience.

The software is equally interesting. Although the design listing reportedly labeled the device as a Chromebook, the operating system is identified as Aluminum OS. Previous reports have linked Aluminum OS to Google’s upcoming AI-powered laptop platform rather than ChromeOS. Google has yet to officially reveal the operating system’s final branding.

That being said, the leak also provides a rough look at the available ports. The laptop appears to include two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, making it considerably more versatile than many premium ultrabooks.

Hardware specs remain under the wraps

Hardware specifications remain a mystery for now. The listing doesn’t reveal the processor, RAM, or storage configuration. It does, however, mention an Ultra-Ceramic Light Alloy chassis, claiming the material is 34% lighter and 13% stronger, although parts of the description appear unfinished and should be treated cautiously.

With Lenovo and Asus now out in the open, Google’s hardware plans are becoming much clearer. Acer, Dell, and HP have already been confirmed as Googlebook partners, suggesting more leaks may surface before Google officially introduces its AI-powered laptop family.
