Sony is bringing AI-powered upscaling to the standard PS5. The company has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new version of its AI upscaling technology designed specifically to run efficiently on the base console.

Sony brings PSSR-style AI upscaling to the base PS5

PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to reconstruct them with more detail and stability than conventional upscaling methods. Sony says its computational requirements previously made it impossible to bring the technology to the standard PS5.

QSSR changes that by using a streamlined neural network architecture alongside a hand-tuned implementation designed to maximize performance on PS5 hardware. Sony says the technology can deliver improvements in image detail and stability, although PSSR remains the more advanced solution on PS5 Pro.

The technology comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Unlike the PS5 Pro’s PSSR, QSSR is built as a lighter performance tier that can operate within the standard PS5’s hardware limitations.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are getting QSSR first

Sony has already confirmed the first two games using QSSR. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are receiving patches that add QSSR as an additional graphics option on the base PS5. Sony also plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, meaning more games could eventually use the technology.
