The gaming community received some of the best news last week when Microsoft fixed the old Call of Duty video game matchmaking servers. Unintentionally, the fixing made old Call of Duty games become the top-selling games on the Xbox Store, while Xbox X consoles sold out in days in certain regions.

This situation has generated a lot of buzz. For example, Microsoft also fixed the servers for another old Xbox game, Shadowrun, and a lot of people are wondering now what’s next in store. Some say old video game franchises, such as Project Gotham Racing, will also benefit from a remastered version.

And other people want a full Call of Duty classic collection coming to the Xbox Store. Given the recent enthusiasm about playing older games and the commercial buzz it has generated, the Redmond-based tech giant might just do it. They might release a Call of Duty classic collection in the near future.

From another business perspective, the collection needs to happen. One of MS’s biggest arguments during their court hearings was that they wanted Activision’s games to be available everywhere.

But, is it necessary? A Call of Duty classic collection might sound like a dream come true for many nostalgic gamers, but at the end of the day, it’s not such a good idea.

Call of Duty Classic in 2023? Good, but what about the newer titles

While a Call of Duty Classic Collection might happen sooner than later, the idea that people would love to play older games instead of the newer titles could not be the best idea, business-wise.call of duty classic 2023

Let’s look at this way: the recent situation with old Call of Duty servers being fixed up has made it clear that a lot of people are enjoying playing old games. If Microsoft were to release a Call of Duty Classic Collection, then a lot of people would simply forget about the newer titles in favor of the old games.

As much as we’d love for it to happen, in the long run, this is not the best business decision. Instead, it could financially burden both Microsoft and especially Activision-Blizzard, which makes a lot of its revenue from modern Call of Duty games.

Plus, old Call of Duty game servers would need to be maintained and supervised, and updated. So that would mean that all the focus on the newer titles would be repurposed into old Call of Duty games.

The only way this could happen is if Microsoft-Activision would release the old games, or at least elements of them, with the newer titles. This might mean old games skins coming to newer titles, or in game-bonuses. The list can go on.

But fully focusing on old Call of Duty games is not really an option, nor a good idea. However, Microsoft will find a solution. And in time, you’ll be able to enjoy both the old Call of Duty content and new Call of Duty games.
