Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Won't Release on PS4 & Xbox One

Last week, rumors started floating around that this year’s Call of Duty might still land on older consoles like PS4. Well, that rumor has now been shot down by the official Call of Duty account on X, and it changes things more than you might expect.

The new Call of Duty game will move past last-gen consoles

In a post on X from earlier today, the official Call of Duty account clearly stated, “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.” The statement effectively confirms that the 2026 entry is skipping last-gen hardware.

Although the post didn’t explicitly mention Xbox One, Tom Warren on X noted that the next game in the franchise, reportedly Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, will also skip Xbox One. For those unaware, Call of Duty has been releasing on PS4 and Xbox One for over a decade, stretching across multiple console generations without fully letting go of older hardware.

Well, this move may finally open the door for more noticeable technical upgrades. Developers no longer have to scale gameplay, visuals, and performance around hardware that is now over a decade old. That being said, millions of players are still on PS4 and Xbox One, which means this decision could split the player base more clearly than before.

Not to forget, Microsoft, at the time of announcing Game Pass price changes, also confirmed that new Call of Duty titles will no longer launch on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on day one. Instead, these games are expected to arrive later, likely during the following holiday season, roughly a year after release. Meanwhile, existing Call of Duty titles already available on Xbox Game Pass will remain unaffected and continue to be accessible to subscribers.
